The Wounded Spirit - part 6

Uncategorized Nov 04, 2022

Several years ago I heard a man share about the loss of his teenage son due to a drunken driver. As he spoke I could sense that his wound was still there in his spirit. Counseling classes had encouraged him, advocates had assisted him, and organizations helped him cope to some degree. But the wound to his spirit was still evident and will remain until he allows Jesus to completely heal it. Jesus is the healing balm that covers and heals the deep, deep pain of a wounded spirit.

So many things can create wounds to our spirit. Unforgiveness, false accusations, divorce, wrong words spoken at a time of crisis, abuse, loss of vocation, guilt, sorrow, and false prophecies are just a few. Divorce alone wounds the couple, the family, the friends, the children, the church, and only God knows how many others. I believe that is one of the reasons that the Word says that God hates divorce. Divorce wounds everyone it touches. It does not matter how we do it, word it, cover it or try to fix it, divorce is a wounding and painful experience to everyone involved.

Divorce in the world today truly is of epidemic proportions. It is particularly bothersome to see how high the divorce rate is among Christians. Many couples wound each other so much that after a while, they are unable to overcome the pain.

Children in these divorce situations are always affected. You can tell their hearts are wounded by the loss of the “sparkle” you normally find in a child’s eyes. As a pastor I have watched the “light go out” in the eyes of children when they realize their family life has changed forever. Some children are devastated as they watch their previously loving family turn into people who yell, fight, and speak evil of one another.

Years ago I remember a little boy who always had that “sparkle.” He was a happy, confident little guy enjoying life to the fullest. But one day his mother had to tell him that she and his Daddy were divorcing. The day she told him this, that “sparkle” left. Unfortunately, he is a grown man now and he still has not let the Lord heal his wounded heart. There’s a residue of heaviness within his spirit that needs to “sparkle” again and only the power of the Lord’s touch will do that.

Mothers of Nations, if divorce has wounded you, please allow the Holy Spirit to complete the healing of your heart right now.  It is never too late or too difficult for the healing power of God to make our hearts whole and well!
