The Anointing - part 9

Uncategorized Jun 30, 2023

Have you enjoyed our series of entries on the topic of the anointing?  I certainly have enjoyed sharing with you these past several weeks.

This will be our final blog entry regarding the topic of the anointing of God.  Let me share some final thoughts with you now.

The relationship of time and the anointing is intriguing. The time element is fascinating, as it appears as though much is involved in how long the anointing lingers.  Sometimes one worship song will keep the anointing flowing.  If there is a change to another song, the anointing may lift.

Sometimes an anointing will flow in a service from beginning to end.  Other times portions of a meeting are particularly anointed.  I have given up on trying to figure it out!

It also appears as though prayer enhances the anointing’s flow and reverence keeps it going.  Other than that, God is God, and He does what He wants as He wills.  We may be able to stir up the anointing for healing by preaching on it, but we cannot produce the healings ourselves.

Mothers of Nations, most certainly the anointing grows as we are diligent, devoted, and dedicated to the Lord.  The anointing is always in us.  We just need to stir it up.

The anointing is not constrained to just ministry, for the Bible tells us of many people anointed for crafts, music, building, and leading.  We need the anointing in our marriages, for parenting, on our jobs, and even to survive.

I have been told that Alexander Dowie, a famous preacher in the 1800’s, was praying for the nation of Australia because it had been hit with a plague.  As he prayed, the scripture “The devil comes to kill, steal and destroy” became revelation to him, revealing that the devil was a destroyer.  The anointing came on him and he walked into the home of a dying girl to set her free.  The anointing in this situation came with revelation of the Healer, the power to heal, the gift of faith, and the discerning of the devil.  Dowie walked in that anointing for years.

Psalm 89:19-29 lists many results or benefits that come from the anointing.  They include:

  • verse 19 God’s help
  • verses 19, 24, 27, 29 Exaltation and authority
  • verse 20 Being a servant of the Lord
  • verse 21 God’s hand on us
  • verse 21 God’s strength
  • verse 22 Freedom from deception, freedom from the wicked
  • verse 23 Victory over enemies
  • verses 24-25 God’s faithfulness and lovingkindness
  • verse 25 Influence over the nations
  • verse 26 Father-Son relationship
  • verse 27 Membership in the church of firstborn
  • verses 28, 30-37 Partakers in God’s Covenant
  • verse 29 Establishment of descendants forever
  • Psalm 104:15 Glistening countenance  (I have seen this as a call to ministry sometimes.)

When is the anointing evident?

The anointing is evident when:

  1. God goes beyond natural abilities imparting supernatural ability.
  2. A speaker flows into an unexpected vein of ministry.
  3. The conscious sense of God’s abiding and moving Presence appears.
  4. A leader’s message brings spiritual results in the lives of his/her hearers.
  5. Repentance comes.
  6. Healing occurs.
  7. People are encouraged and edified by worship.
  8. A broken heart is healed.
  9. Jesus is glorified and the Kingdom of God advances.

Last of all, we see that the anointing is needed to produce fruit. God uses the anointing on our lives to change the world and us.  In the Hebrew language, the words for anointing mean to overflow, to satisfy, to produce light, to rub with oil, to consecrate, to smear over with oil, or to make rich or fat.

When God gave us the Holy Spirit, along with the Spirit came the anointing of the Sprit. We need to be open to flowing in the Spirit and allowing God to use us to minister in the anointing.  Sometimes it might be for consecration and the people are sensing a separation unto God. Other times the anointing may be a vehicle to bring light or revelation to our circumstances.

In 1 Samuel 16:1-13, David was anointed King.  The horn filled with oil represented filling him with God’s character and nature.  Samuel was asked to use the horn of oil when anointing David.  The Lord had David anointed by Samuel in this way to release Kingship in him, to give him the grace to accomplish his life purpose, to develop character in his life, to set him apart, and to commission him into a position of authority.

David made mistakes along the way, but the one thing he never wanted to lose was the Holy Spirit, or what we call the anointing.  David kept his heart pure before God, as he knew the anointing on his life depended upon it.  Even after sinning with Bathsheba, David cried out to God that God would not take His Spirit from him.  He never wanted to lose God’s anointing on his life or ministry.

There is no other thing given to man that is more precious than God’s anointing.  Jesus gave His life that we could receive Him and His anointing.  Mothers of Nations, treasure Him and the price He paid that you might walk in His Spirit and carry His anointing.

May the anointing of God’s Holy Spirit fill you.  May His anointing grace you for all the circumstances and situations you face in your life. Lord, continue to give us fresh oil!
