Fill My Cup, Lord -- part 2

Uncategorized Oct 06, 2023

Let’s continue our discussion of what it means to be “thirsty” spiritually by first looking at this passage in Isaiah 44:1-5.

“Yet hear now, O Jacob My servant, and Israel whom I have chosen.
Thus says the Lord who made you and formed you from the womb, who will help you: ‘Fear not, O Jacob My servant; and you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.
For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring;
They will spring up among the grass like willows by the watercourses.’
One will say, ‘I am the Lord’s’; another will call himself by the name of Jacob; another will write with his hand, ‘The Lord’s,’ and name himself by the name of Israel.

As we consider this passage, why do you think God uses water to explain blessing as He says, “I will pour water on him who is thirsty.”

Here are a few possible reasons for this analogy of water and blessing.

  1. Water is common to all. We all know something about the properties and value of water.
  2. Water is usually abundant and available to all, except in drought. So we could also say that God is always there for all.  He’s abundant and available to guide us, to light our path, and to give us grace.
  3. Water is indispensable for life. We cannot have any kind of a spiritual life without God.  It’s Him Who helps us face life and deal with the trials of life.  We can’t make it in life without water and we cannot make it in life without God!

When we feel physically weak, we need to seek Him to fill us up.  Here are a few Scriptures that declare God’s faithfulness to quench our spiritual thirst, especially in those wilderness and dry places of life.

Isaiah 44: 3 (NIV) -- For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.

Isaiah 49: 10 -- They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water.

Isaiah 58: 11 (NIV) – The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.

  1. Water cleanses. Just like naturally water is used to clean dirty, unclean things, God can deal with our sin or other unclean areas of our lives by the Word of God and the blood of Jesus. Hebrews 10: 22 (NIV) -- Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
  2. Water renews and refreshes. There is nothing like a shower or nice bath when you need to relax or unwind. However, only God can refresh our spirit and renew our soul!
  3. Water gives life. Without water, life will come to an end. Spiritually, God is our Source of life as well as our source of blessing.

Isaiah 12: 3 (NIV) -- With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

  1. Just like water is a blessing to our human bodies, God Himself is our spiritual blessing: of abundant life, of renewing, of cleansing, and of refreshing.

Mothers of Nations, God will pour water on us whenever we ask.

Revelation 21: 6 (NIV) --  He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.

Psalm 63: 1 (NIV) -- You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.

Are you thirsty for “living water” today? Reach out to Him right now and ask Him to quench your thirst with His living water!
