Faith or Fear? Part 1

Uncategorized Nov 10, 2023

This week we are going to start a three-week discussion on the topic “Faith or Fear?” Mothers of Nations, fear is something we all face in our lives. Some people face fears more often than others. As Christians we must learn how to face our fears and overcome them with faith. This is simply a necessity for faith-filled lifestyles.

We know from the Word that God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. In light of this truth, let’s consider the story of David and Goliath for a moment. We can see several points related to fear as revealed in this account.

  1. Fear comes from what we see and how we perceive what we see. The Israelites looked at the “giant” situation and were terrified. (1 Samuel 17:24) On the other hand, when David looked at Goliath, he saw a person that was defying God.
  2. The Israelites only looked at their own abilities. In contrast, David saw God’s ability to deal with the situation, not his own.
  3. The Israelites were fixated on what Goliath could do. David knew his God could and would do anything the situation required.
  4. The Israelites focused on the fears of what the giant might do to them. David’s focus was locked in on God’s ability alone to deal with the crisis.

Hebrews 12: 1-2 (NLT)

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting Him, He endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now He is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

Philippians 4: 13 (NLT)

For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

Let’s look quickly at another Scriptural example of those who let fear take over in their lives at times. These would be the disciples. These disciples who daily lived with Jesus and personally saw miracles and wonders firsthand still dealt with fear assaulting their faith on many occasions.

Luke 8: 25 (NLT)

Then he asked them, “Where is your faith?” The disciples were terrified and amazed. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!”

Matthew 6: 8 (NLT)

Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him!

What question did Jesus ask His followers? It was, “Where is your faith?”

Mothers of Nations, fear can control our minds if we let it. We must always be vigilant and endeavor to allow God’s perfect love to control and surround our thoughts and minds.

Next week we will continue this discussion of Faith or Fear? In the meantime, please be vigilant of the enemy’s attempts to move you into the arena of fear. Take note of each time this challenge comes to you and how you are tempted to respond.

Have a faith-filled, blessed week in Jesus!
